Queensland, Australia Mining Law provides that the mine must set a ground point, and all underground equipment needs to be grounded through a copper wire to the grounding point. The regulation also stipulates that all exposed metal surfaces in underground substations should be grounded. A study of the ground conditions at the Mount Isa mine found that the anchoring of the metal components of the substations (using anchors and wire mesh) also provided a good electrical connection to the surrounding rock. It was thus confirmed that not only a large number of underground locations can be grounded through the mine’s grounding system, but those anchorage points generally provide a ground path and have a lower earth resistance than the regulatory ground point. Therefore, it is recommended that metal mines use a multi-path grounding system rather than a single grounding system that is connected to a single surface grounding point.
