19世纪法国人让·布封说过:“人类迄今为止所从事的最高贵的征服,就是征服了豪迈而彪悍的骏马”。骑马这种交通方式对于现代人来说已经非常陌生了,汽车发明后,马作为战争或者日常交通工具的时代就一去不返了,而骑马也逐渐演变成了马术运动。公元前1500年古埃及人已经开始了骑马竞赛活动。古罗马时代人们也在竞技场上开始把骑马竞赛作为一项娱乐。此后的古奥运会上就陆陆续续出现了有马加入的竞赛项目。我们现在所熟悉的马术运动的雏形是在16世纪的欧洲出现的。直到18世纪末马术才成为了一个独立的体育项目。
