The increase in sulfur content in hot metal and the increase in demand for low-sulfur steel have led Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd. Wakayama Plant to study the possibility of desulfurizing with saturated magnesium coke. Through the study of various desulfurization methods, it is confirmed that the saturated coke is the best method for desulfurization. This article provides an overview of equipment usage and process procedures and discusses desulfurization reactions. Sumitomo Metal Industries Co., Ltd. Wakayama Steel has three steelmaking plants with an annual capacity of 9 million tons of crude steel, as detailed in Table 1.
