OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of endogenous carbon monoxide (CO) in plasma, liver, spleen, kidney, heart, lung and other vital organs in rabbits with endotoxin shock and the effect of hemoglobin oxygenase inhibitor zinc protoporphyrin . Methods: The experimental rabbits were divided into 3 groups: control group, endotoxin shock group and zinc protoporphyrin treatment group. CO content was determined by Chalmers hemoglobin binding and dithionite method. Results: In the endotoxic shock group, the content of CO in plasma increased rapidly after endotoxin injection, and the content of CO in liver, spleen, heart and lung were also significantly increased. Using zinc protoporphyrin significantly inhibited the plasma CO and the CO level in liver, spleen, heart and lung Increase, and can significantly reduce endotoxin-induced blood pressure and metabolic acidosis. Conclusion: CO is a new endogenous mediator involved in a series of pathophysiological processes of endotoxic shock
