Botulinum toxin binds to the presynaptic membrane of the cholinergic nerve, inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, resulting in a loss of local cholinergic innervation. To date, there is little or no evidence that botulinum toxin inhibits acetylcholine release from parasympathetic cholinergic presynaptic terminals. In this study, the authors examined the anticholinergic effects of purified botulinum toxin A and D in the submandibular gland at non-lethal doses. The target nerve fibers are postganglionic parasympathetic neurons that run in the lingual nerve, which dominate the submandibular glands and ducts.
