2005年10月《太阳照常升起》开机,曹久平早在5个月之前,就写下了对未来影片的理解,这段文字或许会更有助于我们了解这样一部简单而又复杂的影片。“‘新疆’这个地域的概念和形象呈现在影片最后四分之一,但它是压轴,是高潮戏。无垠的戈壁,遥远的地平线,通天的路,荒寂无人之地竟然是热情之源,生命之源;是故事人物生命轨迹的交叉地,是死亡与新生的交叉地(一个女人去结婚,另一女人去奔丧,还有一人在这里降生)。为什么要遥远?要有歌,有舞蹈,有尖叫,有结婚,有火,有光?为什么要有蒸汽机车,有生命的诞生,有太阳升起?本片的主题其实已经非常鲜明——生命之感叹、生命之歌。让观众先目睹一个个人物非正常毁灭的过程,再时光倒流,返回至生命曾经有过的鲜活和希望……观众将生出无尽感叹,人生无常,人生苦短……伴随人一生的本能、欲望、尊严和宿愿竟然如此左右着人们的行为和命运。”
