In the article “Is it possible for the research center of world languages and writings to move to China?” (“Language Construction”, 1993.8), it is very important that Comrade Wu Tieping put forward the issue of not catching up with the advanced world level. I have a few different views, specially put forward to discuss with Comrade Wu. First, China’s linguistics should catch up with the advanced world level? The reform and opening up policy of our party provides a golden opportunity for China’s science and technology to catch up with and surpass the world’s advanced level. Since the implementation of the “863” plan by the state for more than seven years, many scientific fields have achieved fruitful results that have attracted worldwide attention. Some have reached or exceeded the world advanced level. So, Chinese linguistics should catch up with the world advanced level? I think we must catch up with the world advanced level. In general, the field of linguistics can no longer accommodate other domestic scientific fields
