我所于1978年从河北张家口地区坝下农科所引进两个谷子高度雄性不育系——算系28和黄系4。这两个不育系不育株率均达100%,但每穗不育度为90—95%,有5—10%的可育花具有保持雄性不育性的能力,其遗传机制属于一对隐性基因控制的核不育。坝下农科所首用近千个品种与之测交,找不到保持系,而以本系可育花为不育系传种接代,以普通品种为恢复系与不育系配制杂种谷子,优势显著,故称谷子“两系法”杂交种。
