5古代西方人对中国的称呼与我们自认为的中原正统王朝无关。反倒是少数民族的名字成了我们的代号。学过英语的人都知道,中国的英文名称叫做“China”——支那。为什么叫这个名字呢?人们有好几种解释。有人说,古希腊人喜欢中国的丝绸,便用“赛里斯”(Seres)来称呼中国,意为“丝国”。
5 The ancient Westerners' call to China has nothing to do with what we consider to be the Central Plains orthodox dynasty. Instead, the name of the minority became our code name. All those who have learned English know that the English name in China is “China” - that of China. Why is this name? There are several explanations people have. Some people say that the ancient Greeks like China's silk, they use “Seres” to refer to China, meaning “silk country.”
