1 Indonesia’s Shipbuilding Industry 1.1 Overview of the Shipbuilding Industry Development Indonesia is an island nation that stretches across the equator and comprises 5,700 miles of east and west, with more than 13,700 islands. Since ancient times, ships play a very important role in social activities such as transportation and trade in the country. The manufacture of wooden ships is very well developed, so far there are still a large number of wooden vessels in operation. The construction of steel ships, since the dominance of the Netherlands during the reign of many repair-based shipyards, seldom build new ships. In addition, since Indonesia basically did not import steel vessels to build technology, Indonesia has lost its ability to build steel vessels after its independence. As a result of war reparations, Japan received more than a dozen Indonesian shipbuilding students in the mid-1950s and provided a patrol boat to Indonesia. After returning to Japan, these returned students became the backbone of the development of the shipbuilding industry in Indonesia.
