1 Power generation capacity In the 20 years from 1970 to 1990, the world’s power generation capacity increased from 506.2 billion kWh to 1164.9 billion kWh, which more than doubled. The growth rate during the 1980-1990 period was slower than that of the previous decade, but the growth rate was still rapid; it increased by 18% in five years or about 4% in one year. In 1991, the world’s power generation exceeded 12 trillion kWh.
