The U.S. debate over the use of MTBE in gasoline will escalate into a debate in the U.S. Congress. After months of careful consideration, the EPA considered that continued use of MTBE at the current level would pose a significant threat to water resources and required Congress to immediately amend the Clean Air Act (CAA) passed in 1990 to cancel the new Formula gasoline minimum oxygen content of 2% of the provisions;
