(一)来自“奥林匹克之乡”的希腊足球队位于欧洲巴尔干半岛南端的希腊,素以“奥林匹克之乡”而闻名于世。然而作为世界第一运动的足球,希腊足球以前在世界、在欧洲,可谓一直默默无闻,毫无作为。但是,当1993年5月22日希腊足球队在第15届世界杯欧洲区第五小组赛中,客场以1比1逼和强劲对手俄罗斯队,从而以6战4胜2平积10分,成为欧洲区第一支获得出线资格而进军美国的球队时,希腊足球总算是场眉吐气,一改颓势与形象,向世人庄严宣告希腊足球崛起了。这也是自1934年希腊队首次参加世界杯外围赛以来,经过了六十年的蹉跎岁月,今天终于如愿以偿.一露峥嵘,首次入围世界杯决赛圈。当然,希腊队今天的成功,还在于机遇与自己的努力。说机遇,得归咎于南斯拉夫队的禁赛,使希腊队所在小组只剩下俄罗斯队一个较强的对手,加上匈牙利足球的今非昔比,极不景气,无疑使
