对英国苜蓿黄萎病菌进行形态和生物学特性的研究结果表明,该病菌在PDA培养基上分生孢子透明无色,孢子梗基部为黑褐色,后期有黑色休眠菌丝产生,未发现微菌核和厚垣孢子,证实为黑白轮枝菌(Verticiliumalbo-atrumReinke&Berthold),其生长适温为20~25℃,最适pH值为6.5~9.5。利用人工接菌法测定了对我国主要经济作物的致病性,在供试12种作物中,对豌豆、番茄、西瓜、茄子、绿豆、豇豆和马铃薯具致病力,而对棉花、线椒、甜椒、向日葵、大豆无致病力。
