2003年3月7日晚八点,74岁的老军医姜素椿(解放军302医院原专家组成员、从事传染病防治工作有47年经验、已经退居二线)在家中,接到他所在单位——医务部——领导同志打来的电话,请他立即赶到病区对一名来自山西的危重患者(这是“非典”袭击北京的第一例)进行抢救。院长和政委考虑到姜教授年事已高,又做过鼻癌手术,只要他在病房玻璃墙外面坐镇指挥就可以;但当姜素椿看到危在旦夕的患者,就不顾一切冲进了抢救病房。他全身心地投入抢救工作,80分钟后,由于这位患者病情过重,抢救无效不幸去世了。为了探讨病原查明疫情,姜教授建议立即着手尸检,他和医务人员一直忙碌到第二天凌晨。院长和政委不得不对姜素椿下命令:
