[World Nuclear News website reported on May 16, 2014] The UK recently completed the construction of the first two underground disposal sites for low-radio waste in Dounreay. The construction of these two treatment rooms began in November 2011. During the construction, a total of 243,000 cubic meters of rock were excavated, using 7600 cubic meters of concrete, 1,330 tons of steel and 260 tons of structural steel. The two treatment rooms are expected to receive radioactive waste from the second half of 2014. After the disposal chamber is full of radioactive waste, the slurry will be used to backfill the disposal chamber, making the disposal chamber a large block. It is planned to build up to six such underground treatment rooms in Durer.
