蒲松龄为何要创作《聊斋志异》?这涉及到一个作家从事创作活动的心态问题。创作心态实质上是一个立体的、连续的、流动的心理活动过程。它错综复杂,因人而异,因时而异,因事而异,又具有一定的层次、结构、系统和规律。在这个过程中,作家的思想、情感,以至欲望、动机、气质、个性、兴趣、习惯,甚至潜意识心理,都在发生着作用和影响。从《聊斋志异》思想内容之庞杂和审美价值之差异便可以看出,作者在创作《聊斋志异》时心态内容是多层面的、复杂的,甚至是矛盾的。但这一问题至今未得到比较系统的论述,有些评论也仅是从某一角度稍微触及,如游国恩等人编著的《中国文学史》上有:“《聊斋志异》是作者有所寄托的,……他之所以采用鬼狐故事,是因为它便于避免清初严酷的文网和自由地表现生活理想。”这是评价《聊斋志异》
