Netscape’s Compass Server 3.0 pointed out a flat intranet path for users, but complicated installation and configuration left administrators at a loss. Compass Server 3.0 was publicly tested this week to replace the original Catalog Server 1.0 with Netscape’s SuiteSpot family of servers. Compass retains Catalog’s powerful automatic indexing and searching capabilities and adds new features to allow users to create personal search pages on the intranet. However, Compass also failed to change the catalog unmanageable shortcomings. Compass Server 3.0 runs on Windows NT and UNIX systems and ZD Labs tested an earlier beta of it and found it promising to make the information resources of an intranet more accessible.
