1956年9月,中国共产党第八次全国代表大会在北京召开。会上除通过一系列重大决议与选举出新的中央委员会外,毛泽东还向大会发出了一份倡议书,倡议中央领导同志逝世后一律实行火葬,以移风易俗。当时,毛泽东、周恩来、刘少奇、朱德、邓小平、董必武、彭德怀、彭真等领导人带头在倡议书上签了名。接着,新当选的中央委员们除许世友外,也纷纷在倡议书上签名。如今,50多年过去了,当年当选的195名中央委员和中央候补委员绝大部分已离开人世,除许世友经中央批准回家土葬,刘格平按回族习俗安葬外,其余全都实行了火葬。其中一些中央委员在遗嘱中还特别要求丧事从简,不举办一切仪式,包括不举行遗体告别、不安排领导同志吊唁、不开追悼会、不保留骨灰、不在报纸上宣扬等,履行了他们在倡议书上所作的诺言,从而表现出了崇高的思想境界与高尚的情操。现将他们中的一部分介绍如下:
In September 1956, the Eighth National People’s Congress of the Chinese Communist Party was held in Beijing.
