2008年5月12日四川汶川映秀发生了旷世罕见的8.0级大地震。这次强震发生在青藏高原东部与四川盆地之间的龙门山断裂带,其主震震级之大、余震次数之多令世人震惊。大震后2个多月发生余震1.8万余次,其中最强的余震震级达6.4级。
May 12, 2008 Yingchuan, Sichuan Province, has experienced a rare 8.0-magnitude earthquake. The strong earthquake occurred in the Longmen Shan fault zone between the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Sichuan Basin. Its mainshock magnitude and the number of aftershocks shocked the world. More than 18,000 aftershocks occurred more than two months after the earthquake, with the strongest magnitude of aftershock reaching 6.4.
