In a massive program of science and technology budget announced earlier this year, the Japanese government provided abundant funding for the study of space science, astronomy and the global environment. Japan's Ministry of Education, Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Ministry of Health and Welfare have all made substantial increases in funding for science-related budget projects. The budget funding of the Office of Science and Technology has risen sharply since then. Several new projects have got their own money. The budget proposal was approved by the Ministry of Finance and the Cabinet at the end of December 1989 and will be implemented in April this year. As the Japanese opposition party's parliamentary position has recently been strengthened, the opposition boycott may delay the passage of budget proposals, but the funding for science and technology research will not be greatly affected.
