Jamaica writer Malone James with the new work “a brief history of seven murders,” successfully won the 2015 Booker Award. The novel takes the murder of Bob Magley, the originator of the reggae music of 1976, as a clue, cleverly concatenating the events that occurred to these figures with the help of various kinds of people’s oral dicussion of the year’s complicated and confusing cases. The storyline of the novel spans more than thirty years and recreates the disorganized gang and political world in Jamaica through writing on politics, race, violence and crime, reflecting James’ reflection on the predicament of the Jamaican people’s survival. The novel is magnificent, an “epic” that reflects contemporary Jamaican society.
