There have been many reports of death from inhalation apnea using phenothiazines. Its mechanism is thought to be due to dysfunction of the esophageal sphincter and dysphagia. It has been reported in patients taking phenothiazide drugs disappeared swallowing reflex accounted for 40.3%. It has also been reported that fluphenazine and vanishing swallowing reflex induced paralysis and cerebral palsy syndrome, is considered to be due to the patient unable to close the glottis or cough weakness
