NKT cells are a subset of lymphocyte subsets expressing semi-invariant T cell receptors (TCRs) that recognize glycolipids presented by non-polymorphic MHC class I molecules CDld. NKT cells have immunomodulatory properties that fight off their own antigens and pathogens. Recent studies have found that NKT cells are one of the target cells for HIV-1 infection and are selectively reduced in HIV-infected individuals. This article focuses on the mechanisms and consequences of the above findings and the prospects of HIV-1 infection.
