This article examines the biographical notes Lao She, London and the Missionary Society of London (1921-1929) written by Robert Bechtel in 1994, and the literary biography Lao She in London, written by Anne Vicerde in 1994, These two English works adopt Lao She’s brigade edge experience. This paper argues that the marginal perspective focuses on the silhouette of the protagonist rather than on the facade, which not only solves the problem of lack of historical data strategically, but also enables the author to demonstrate the more complicated relationship between Lao She’s cultural activities and London’s urban living environment relationship. Due to the different social, cultural and academic concerns of Bechtel and Wei Chad, they provide an important complement to Lao She’s narration of Chinese biographies through an integrated and transnational historical understanding of individual travelers.
