The unique narrative traditions of “history” and “speech” in ancient China have created two unique “narrators” images of ancient Chinese novels: the “spokesman” of classical novels and the “storyteller” of vernacular novels. Their distinctive and unique stylistic features have shaped the special style of the narrative texts of ancient Chinese novels. The narrator’s image in ancient Chinese novels embodies the values of the implied author (“the second me” of the author, the value aggregator of orthodox culture), and has itself intensified into a special image of rationalization and value integration. This is the fundamental reason for the long-term pattern development of narrators in ancient Chinese novels.
