关于楚的始国问题,目前史学界仍存在着分歧。或认为楚始国于鬻熊之时,或认为楚始国于熊绎之时,或认为始于熊通,或认为始于熊赀,等等。众说纷纭,莫衷一是。本文试就此问题,谈点个人的浅见,以期抛砖引玉。在弄清楚的始国问题之前,首先要了解楚族的形成。《汉书·艺文志》云:“鬻熊,周封为楚祖”,并说“楚鬻熊居丹阳。”鬻熊之时楚得到周王赞封而正式承认其族属,鬻熊自然为楚立族之先人。《史记·周本纪》云:“西伯文王……伯夷叔齐在孤竹,闻西伯善养老……散宜生、鬻子、辛甲大夫之徒皆往归之。”刘向《别录》说:“鬻子名熊,封于楚。”这里的鬻子就是鬻熊。可知鬻熊此时已归服了周室,并在周室担任了官职。《楚宝》载:“鬻熊……年九十始见于文王,王曰:‘噫老矣。’鬻曰:‘使臣捕兽已老矣,若使坐策国事臣年尚可。’文王善之,遂以为师。”《史记·楚世家》也载鬻熊
