Lloyd Bitzer’s 1968 article, The Rhetoric Scene, is a turning point in the study of rhetoric in the United States. This essay attempts to define rhetoric as a discourse response to a particular situation and aims to break the tradition of Aristotelian rhetoric. At the time of its publication, it attracted the attention of many rhetorical theorists and critics. The concept of “rhetoric scene ” proposed by Bitzer is widely accepted, but critics have different opinions on how to understand the rhetorical scene and the relationship between the various elements. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the essential meaning of Bitzer ’s “Rhetoric Scene ” and to explore the evolution of the postmodernity trend in American rhetorical scene research.
