Ninety-nine percent of Australia’s telephone subscribers have been integrated into the national automatic telephone network and an additional 10,000 subscribers were automated in the first half of 1983, aiming to automate national telephones by 1990. At present, there are still about 35,500 hand-held telephones nationwide that require technological transformation, most of which are in remote rural areas. It is much more difficult to achieve technological transformation and access to the national network, and the investment is very expensive. Investment in this program is estimated at A $ 250 million from 1983 to 1990. In order to apply advanced digital transmission technology to remote areas, it is proposed to adopt a digital radio concentrator system (DRCS) which could be put into use in more remote rural areas in 1984. Each system can accommodate 120 users, the maximum distance to the switch is 600km. Some 6,000 rural users plan to use this system to meet their communications needs.
