To assess fetal exposure to heavy metals, the authors observed 503 pregnant women in Belgium from 1975 to 1976, including 474 Europeans and 29 Asian and African living in Brussels. The concentrations of three heavy metals in 100 ml of whole blood were measured and their distributions in maternal blood and umbilical cord blood were compared. Maternal venous blood taken during birth, neonatal cord blood collection. European pregnant women aged 16 to 43 years old, average 26 years old; Asian and African 18 to 40 years old, average 26 years old. The results showed that the correlation coefficients of serum heavy metals in maternal blood and neonates were r = +0.808 (P <0.001), r = +0.624 (P <0.001) and r = +0.38 (P <0.001) Some people have reported fetal blood mercury levels slightly higher
