文字的产生是图书馆诞生与发展的根源,而图书馆产生以后,就自然会出现藏书的保护问题。中东作为世界文明发源地之一,古代世界上许多著名图书馆产生在埃及,许多藏书保护的技术方法也首先在埃及出现。据考古发现,历史上发掘最早的王室图书馆是埃及新王国第十八王朝末叶的阿门霍特普四世(公元前1379—1362年)——埃赫挪顿的王室图书室。这次发掘发现了一种特制的盒子,经研究,是专供收藏纸草纸用的。这次从古埃及遗迹的发掘成果及图书记载,可充分说明古埃及时期的藏书保护工作是相当出色的。我国作为四大文明古国之一,不仅图书馆产生较早,而且藏书保护历来具有优良传统。具体表现为以下几个方面:
