随着网络经济的迅速崛起和因特网的快速发展，人们对于数据业务、语音、数据、图像等多媒体通信的需求日益旺盛。提供宽带多媒体业务，已成为网络运营商开拓市场的新的空间，宽带城域网成为信息高速公路建设的重要部分。现在基于ＰＯＳ、ＧＥ技术的宽带ＩＰ网以及ＡＴＭ网是宽带城域网的主要核心平台，宽带接入技术将成为城域网接入的主要手段。
