中世纪常被人们称为西方文明倒退的时代,它是宗教审判荼毒生灵的刑场,是黑死病带走2000万条性命的地狱,是刀光剑影、战事不休的严寒。中世纪里的女性不过是男主人的附属,这种性别不平等的传统和东方的重男轻女思想竟然出奇的相似。农民和小市民阶级女性为求得糊口之粮而奔波劳碌直到停止呼吸,即便是上流女子大部分也是终其一生游荡在冰冷的城堡里,其最终归宿不过是成为一个素未谋面的男子的新娘,从而成为维系两大家族利益的纽带。但历史总有例外,七八百年前的英格兰贵族女子里有这么一群人,透过文献记录,她们大多虽然被后人遗忘姓名,记不起模样,留下的或许是寥寥几句,但她们以自强自立为指导,担负起生命赋予之责任,捕捉人生的所有精彩,高傲地活在崇尚武力、迷恋男权暴力的黑暗岁月。
