In February 1986, Japanese businessmen introduced a batch of Rush Scirpus juncoides seedlings for straw matting from Fujishan County, Japan, and planted them in Dongshan District, Qiongshan County, Hainan Island. In April, the shoot tip began to change color. In July and August, with the increase of tillering plants and the onset of typhoons, the shoots developed brown lesions and rapidly expanded to almost 100% of the affected plants. The plants transplanted from the tillers also successively turned yellowish-brown downward from the top, and finally the whole plant died of dead white color. A large number of parasitic nematodes were found in many isolates, and identified as Aphelen-choides frariae.
