The breakup of the Soviet Union and the fission of Eastern Europe brought about many new national entities. The membership of the International Monetary Fund also increased. In the fall of 1992, Russia, the other republics of the former Soviet Union and Switzerland were all member states. As of the end of 1992, the International Monetary Fund has a total of 173 member states. Almost all Member States paid their supplementary contributions in 1992. In Poland, for example, people’s fees increased from 68 million SDRs to 988.5 million SDRs. (1SDA = $ 1.47 at the end of 1992). The membership fee of the new Member State and the increase in membership fees have increased the Fund’s total fund by half, which now amounts to about 200 billion U.S. dollars. The level of membership fees depends on the Member State’s economic, financial strength and its foreign exchange reserves and export regulations
