When Intel’s 64-bit Merced chip will be available in 1999, the chip is in the transition from 32-bit to 64-bit, and the processor speed will eventually exceed 1GHz, creating a new “Slot” pattern. It is said that in order to allow users to more easily enter the 64-bit chip world, Intel is transforming 32-bit Pentium Ⅱ processor, in order to fit the new Merced packaging. The processor’s temporary code, “Tanner,” will be based on the high-speed Pentium II, but Merced packaging, such as “Slot M,” may be expanded for easy upgrades. This new Slot design reflects Intel’s current strategy for the first generation of Slot 1 Pentium II processors and the second-generation Slot 2 architecture. The chip may make Intel reduce the dependence on MicrosoftWindows platform, and at present, Windows is the main operating platform for most Pentium processors. In order to adapt to the introduction of Merced, Intel will manufacture a variety of Pentium Ⅱ chips, a large number of changes mainly from the basic structure of the processor.
