Learned March 5: Following a contract with Intel for a Merced chip to migrate the Sun Solaris operating environment to Intel, Sun announced the Intel Solaris Developer Kit to accelerate the development of Solaris on Intel applications. With this set of tools, developers will be able to quickly develop applications today that easily tune to the upcoming Solaris on Merced. While Solaris on Intel is already supported by developers, the suite will accelerate Solaris on Intel applications infiltration into the enterprise because it will make it easier for developers to create new applications that empower corporate customers to solve Microsoft’s Windows NT Large-scale complex problems that can not be solved. Like the SPARC platform, the Intel platform is the key to the company’s market. Sun is actively developing Solaris Intel applications to provide its customers and OEMs with a high performance Microsoft Windows NT alternative that enables enterprise applications to run on the Intel platform. When the Merced-based host system is expected to come out in 1999, Sun will provide Merced with a 64-bit optimized Solaris software release and is committed to expanding Solaris’s use of major Intel and SPARC computing platforms. Solaris on Merced will leverage the full range of existing 32-bit software and interoperate with such software. There are currently more than 2,500 backbone SPARC Solaris applications available on Solaris, and hundreds of applications are being recompiled. All applications developed for Solaris are forward-compatible with the full 64-bit version of the Solaris operating environment.
