江泽民总书记在党的十四届五中全会论述正确处理社会主义现代化建设中的重大关系时指出,任何情况下,都不能以牺牲精神文明为代价去换取经济的一时发展。因此解决各级领导干部对搞物质文明建设,不能以牺牲精神文明为代价的认识问题,是贯彻党的十四届五中全会精神,进一步加强社会主义精神文明建设的一个重要问题。首先,必须明确坚持物质文明和精神文明共同进步是建设有中国特色社会主义的客观要求。
At the Fifth Plenary Session of the 14th CPC Central Committee, General Secretary Jiang Zemin pointed out that in correctly handling the major relations in the socialist modernization drive, he pointed out in any case that economic development can not be exchanged at the expense of spiritual civilization. Therefore, resolving the understanding of leading cadres at all levels on the construction of material civilization and their inability to sacrifice spiritual civilization is an important issue for implementing the spirit of the Fifth Plenary Session of the 14th CPC Central Committee and further strengthening the construction of socialist spiritual civilization. First of all, we must explicitly insist that the common progress of material civilization and spiritual civilization is an objective requirement for building socialism with Chinese characteristics.
