Researchers at Johns Hopkins recently identified a new mechanism by which the brain works: When the brain is damaged, the brain cells will somehow stimulate the body’s immune cells to process it. This study has been successfully validated in mouse models of traumatic brain injury, stroke and infectious diseases. Researchers already know the high-speed communication between the brain and the immune system, but they do not know how the brain signals the immune cells. Although the immune system’s purpose is to protect the body from damage, the brain’s immune system sends signals far more harm than good, after which the immune cells stay in the brain and cause chronic inflammation and brain damage
