老舍是享有世界声誉的中国现代作家。但直到80年代中期,国外老舍研究界已出版多部老舍年谱后,我国尚无一部以专著形式正式出版的《老舍年谱》。近年来,国内相继推出三部老舍年谱:郝长海、吴怀斌先生合编、安徽黄山书社出版的《老舍年谱》,甘海岚先生编撰、北京书目文献出版社出版的《老舍年谱》,杨立德先生编撰、云南民族出版社出版的《老舍创作生活年谱》。三部老舍年谱的出版已引起国内外老舍研究界的普遍关注,无疑将推进世界人民对老舍的认识。年谱作为史籍中的一种,在我国已有较长的历史,如宋代就有以孔子、朱熹、杜甫、韩愈、苏轼、欧阳修等人为谱主的年谱出版。古人年谱多以谱主为中心,以年月为经纬,胪述谱主一生事迹。所谓“叙一人之道德、学问、事业,约悉无遗而系以年月者,谓之年谱。”(朱士嘉《中国历代名人年谱目录·序》)它杂揉了记传与编年二体,并从谱牒、年表、宗谱、传状等
