高山石是福建寿山石品种之一,因产于福州市寿山乡南面的“高山峰”而得名。高山石的石色瑰丽多彩,红、黄、白、紫、黑、灰、赭各色俱备。各色又有浓淡之分。凡单一颜色的,一般按色定名,如“红高山”、“黄高山”和“白高山”等。每色中又因象取名,如红高山中又分荔枝红、桃花红、美人红、瓜瓤红等多种。常有多色交杂,或由淡渐浓,或色层分明,或如行云流水,或如彩霞生辉,称“巧色高山”。“巧色高山”是雕刻工艺品的理想原材料。高山石的质地较软,雕刻品适宜上油保养,因而亦有人称其为“财主石”。高山石
