1980年前逆转录病毒多半被看为实验室的珍品。当几种逆转录病毒证明与动物肿瘤(白血病、肉瘤)和动物中枢神经系统慢性退行性疾病有关时,人的类似疾病也推测与逆转录病毒有关。直到Gallo等才明确地证明了人类T细胞白血病病毒(HTLV-Ⅰ)和成人T细胞白血病(ATL)的因果关系,接着很快从毛细胞白血病人分离到第2种逆转录病毒HTLV-Ⅱ。1984年,证实人嗜T淋巴细胞病毒(HTLV-Ⅲ),是获得性免疫缺陷综合征
Most retroviruses were considered laboratory treasures until 1980. When several retroviruses prove to be associated with animal tumors (leukemias, sarcomas) and chronic degenerative diseases of the central nervous system in animals, human-like diseases are also speculated to be associated with retroviruses.
