The various definitions presented in this paper have been extensively discussed at the International Metallotoxicological Conference. These concepts solve some of the problems of early detection of toxic metals and their toxic effects and can be used by those engaged in toxicology and environmental hygiene. 1. Critical Concentration: The concentration at which a deleterious functional (reversible or irreversible) change occurs in a cell called the cell-critical concentration (Metal Accumulation Task Group TGMA, 1973). The critical concentration of cells is often related to the prescribed effect. The concentration sufficient to cause cell death is called the lethal concentration of the cell.
