《伊坦·弗洛美》主要讲述了一个发生在新英格兰偏僻小镇的悲剧爱情故事。尽管小说篇幅较短,故事情节也没有太多的新意,但是从一开始便获得了巨大的成功。在对小说文本细读的基础上,我们可以发现华顿对色彩巧妙的运用使这个故事平淡的小说有了不一般的魅力。在主人公语言话语不多的情况下,红、黑、灰三种色彩的运用充分展现了主人公的人物性格和心灵状态;红、黑、灰三色的分离、交织和融合构成了小说主要人物之间的情感、对立和矛盾。
Ethan Frome tells the story of a tragic love story in a remote New England town. Despite the short length of the novel, the storyline is not too new, but it has been a huge success from the very beginning. On the basis of a careful reading of the novel, we can find that Wharton’s subtle use of color fueled the unusual charm of this plain novel. In the case of the protagonist language is not much, the use of three colors of red, black and gray fully demonstrated the hero’s character and psychic state; the separation, interweaving and blending of the three colors of red, black and gray constitute the main character of the novel Between the emotions, confrontation and contradictions.
