From 23rd to 28th July, three million and 700 thousand young people, coming from 175 countries from all over the World, joined together in the City of Rio de Janeiro-Brazil for undoubtedly one of the largest Youth event on Earth: The World Youth Day (WYD).
Data from the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism indicates that two million tourists were in Rio during the WYD, totaling a turnover of R$ 1.2 billion (about U$500 million) in the city's economy, a record visitation for the country, considering that they were all in the same city and at the same period. Apart from Brazil, Argentina, USA and Chile were the countries sending more representatives (pilgrims) to Rio.
The World Youth Day has its own particularities from other events. For instance, most of the work was made by volunteers and the accommodation was made in a solidarity housing system based on charity, a key concept for Christians. Check out a few things about this edition!
Structure
结构
To receive Pope Francis and the pilgrims of WYD, the Justice Department employed 6,008 security professionals and 13,723 armed forces personnel acted during those days. The actual Brazilian Defence Minister, CelsoAmorim, considers that the coordinated action of different security forces was the great legacy of the event. "A lot of people said it would not work because it would be friction between the forces, but what was there was a spirit of full coordination" he said.
More than 84 thousand people subscribed to be volunteers, from whom were selected 60 thousand to work in the logistic of this huge event. Among those, 45 thousand were citizens of Rio, 7.500 from other Brazilian States and 7.500 foreigners. Most of the young volunteers had between 18 and 35 years and were representing 151 different countries. They had varied functions and were distributed at the information centers scattered throughout the city, at the hosting places, at the catechesis, on stage, at the cultural events and composing the teams at the central acts in CopacabanaBeach.
The Municipal Health Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro has set up 11 service stations and mobilized 240 health professionals. In partnership with the Red Cross, 2.400 volunteers were trained as rescuers, besides them the volunteer health care team was comprised of 330 doctors and 569 nurses and nursing assistants. 4,780 medical consultations have been accounted and of these, less than 2% (84) required transfers to the units of the municipal health.
Most of the accommodation were in a solidarity housing system, in which catholic families and institutions open their doors, free of charge, to host pilgrims who registered to participate in the event. The exchange of experiences and connections with people from other countries makes up part of the emotion of the entire event.
Excluding Brazil, the 10 countries with the largest number of volunteers were Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Poland, Peru, Venezuela, Paraguay, Italy, United States and Spain. "The volunteers are the soul of WYD, through volunteering these young highly engaged around a common goal truly exert their youth", affirms Father Ramon Nascimento, executive director of the Sector of Volunteering.
Some Important Themes Addressed
to Youth during WYD
Excluded Ones
The young were invited to allow themselves to be smitten by love, learning always to look upon others, especially those who suffer, and extend a hand to them. Using some biblical characters, the Pope invited them “with all the strength of their youth” not to “wash their hands” facing suffering and exclusion but to have courage to go against the tide, not to feign ignorance and look the other way. He remembered those which are deepest and most painful, as the victims of violence, the innocent and the defenceless; the families in trouble and those who mourn the tragic loss of their children, mentioning the case of the 242 young victims of the fire in the City of Santa Maria (Brazil) at the beginning of this year; the people who suffers from hunger in a world which, on the other hand, permits itself the luxury of throwing away tons of food every day; the victims of drug-induction; those who are persecuted for their religion, for their beliefs or simply for the color of their skin.
Youth Taking Action (Engagement)
In reference to the many young people who throughout the world have taken to the streets, including the ones all over Brazil, in order to express their desire for a more just and fraternal society, the Pope said that he’s “closely following” the news and that “the young people in the streets want to be the protagonists of change. Please, don’t leave it to others to be the protagonists of change. You are the ones who hold the future! You… Through you the future is fulfilled in the world. I ask you also to be protagonists of this transformation. Continue to overcome apathy. I ask you to be builders of the world, to work for a better world. Dear young people, please, don’t be observers of life, but get involved.
Social Responsibility
This subject calls for a certain kind of cultural, and hence political, paradigm. We are the ones responsible for training new generations, helping them to be knowledgeable in economic and political affairs, and solidly grounded in ethical values. The Pope affirmed that “the future demands a rehabilitation of politics here and now, a rehabilitation of politics, which is one of the highest forms of charity. The future also demands a humanistic vision of the economy and a politics capable of ensuring greater and more effective participation on the part of the people, eliminating forms of elitism and eradicating poverty.” The road proposed is that no one should be denied what is necessary and everyone should be guaranteed dignity, fraternity and solidarity.
Leadership
领导力
A significant matter is that the ones “whom life has anointed as a leader”, as the Pope said, needs to have practical goals and seek specific means to attain them. We need to keep our eyes on hope even though sometimes we don’t get immediately to our goals. Hope is what keeps pushing us forward and motivating us to employ all our energies and abilities on behalf of what we do. It also means making the most just decision after having considered all the options and concern always for the common good. It is responsibility of the leader, within the limits of the possible, to embrace all of reality, observing, pondering, evaluating, in order to make decisions in the present but with an eye to the future, reflecting on the consequences of our decisions. Pope Francis affirmed that “to act responsibly is to see one’s own actions in the light of other people’s rights and God’s judgement. This ethical sense appears today as an unprecedented historic challenge, we must search for it and we must enshrine it within our society. Beyond scientific and technical competence, the present situation also demands a sense of moral obligation expressed in a social and deeply fraternal exercise of responsibility.”
Integral Humanism
The common “feeling” of a people, the foundations of its thought and creativity, the basic principles of its life, the criteria with which it assesses priorities and ways of acting, are based on and grow from an integral vision of the human person. This vision of man and of life has also been nourished by the Gospel, in the love of God and brotherhood with our neighbor. The richness of this nourishment can render fruitful a cultural process and, at the same time, is capable of building a better future for all. Was affirmed that “Such a process seeks to promote an integral humanism and the culture of encounter and relationship: this is the Christian way of promoting the common good, the joy of living. This way, faith and reason are united, the religious dimension and the various aspects of human culture: art, science, labour, literature…”
Dialogue
对话
This was a subject not only spoke about, but deeply taken into practice during WYD. The worldwide youth that came to Rio had all the time breathed dialogue among them, among their cultures, when walking on the streets of the city filled with young pilgrims, it was a kind of an anticipation of the Pope’s teaching, where he affirmed that “between selfish indifference and violent protest there is always another possible option: that of dialogue. Dialogue between generations, dialogue within the people, because we are all that people, the capacity to give and receive, while remaining open to the truth. A country grows when constructive dialogue occurs between its many rich cultural components: popular culture, university culture, youth culture, artistic culture, technological culture, economic culture, family culture and media culture… The only way for individuals, families and societies to grow, the only way for the life of peoples to progress, is via the culture of encounter, a culture in which all have something good to give and all can receive something good in return. Today, either we take the risk of dialogue, we risk the culture of encounter, or we all fall; this is the path that will bear fruit”.
Solidarity
团结
As a social legacy during WYD, the Pope visited the community of Varginha, a slum in the North Zone of Rio with population of over 1,150 people, where he spoke about the word solidarity, mentioning that it’s often forgotten or silenced, and made an appeal to those in possession of greater resources, to public authorities and to all people of good will who are working for social justice saying “never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity… No one can remain insensitive to the inequalities that persist in the world! Everybody, according to his or her particular opportunities and responsibilities, should be able to make a personal contribution to putting an end to so many social injustices.” He encourages the fights against hunger and deprivation because no amount of “peace-building” will be able to last, nor will harmony and happiness be attained in a society that ignores, pushes to the margins or excludes a part of itself. We must never allow the throwaway culture to enter our hearts, no one is disposable, only when we are able to share do we become truly rich; everything that is shared is multiplied! The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need, those who have nothing apart from their poverty!
Drugs
毒品
Another part of the social legacy was a visit to the Saint Francis of Assisi Hospital, which assists in the recovery of chemical dependents, the Pope said that the scourge of drug-trafficking that favour violence, sowing a seed of suffering and death, requires of society as a whole an act of courage affirming “A reduction in the spread and influence of drug addiction will not be achieved by a liberalization of drug use, as is currently being proposed in various parts of Latin America. Rather, it is necessary to confront the problems underlying the use of these drugs, by promoting greater justice, educating young people in the values that build up life in society, accompanying those in difficulty and giving them hope for the future.” The young were encouraged to hold hands of the ones in need to help them, of the ones who have fallen into dependency and to say to them that they can get up. It is a difficult task, but if the person really wants to, it is possible.
Future of Humanity (Elderly and Youth)
Our world civilization is excluding the two ends of life that are most full of promise for peoples: the elderly and the young. We don’t take care of the elderly, don’t allow them to speak, don’t allow them to act. And we have a high percentage of young people without study, without work, without employment, etc. We’re excluding the two peaks that make up our future. The Pope proposed “As for the young, they must emerge, they must assert themselves, they must go out to fight for these values; and the elderly must open their mouths, and teach us! Pass on to us the wisdom of the peoples! And I ask the elderly, from my heart: do not cease to be the cultural storehouse of our people, a storehouse that hands on justice, hands on history, hands on values, hands on the memory of the people.” And ended the subject saying “at this moment, you young people and you elderly people are condemned to the same destiny: exclusion. Don’t allow yourselves to be excluded.”
Unquestionably those were days of great personal development, for both, young people present at the event and the ones accompanying it through media. Pilgrims and volunteers who participated proved that it is possible to live with different cultures in harmony and strive for union, without any barriers. It is this unity that generates a cultural interchange that surprises all. There is no barrier for sharing, as some participants could witness:
“For me it was a great surprise, for example, to live with people from Syria and Egypt, to get to know so many people in this great encounter, united in the same objective. There are no boundaries. They have been broken. It?s like we?re all the same nationality because we all share all we have to serve the Lord,” says David Arana, a volunteer from Bolivia.
“We are all similar, that is the greatest surprise. Even though there are different languages, the same feeling is present in WYD that there are no boundaries. Here we live fraternity with joy, it doesn?t matter where you were born”, says Ruth Alonso from Argentina.
“I was with Chileans, Argentineans, Americans, Europeans and a little of everything. Here we were living a sharing between countries, we share our culture and they share theirs.”, said Jorge Flores from Mexico.
The actual world hasn’t got just a face, but inserted in each reality, every face is a local expression of a global drama. Getting together the young can express their drama and desire to share their anguishes, anxieties to germinate ideas for a change, for a better world.
A final thought from the Pope must stay alive in our hearts “one question remains: Where do we start? Some people once asked Mother Teresa of Calcutta what needed to change? They asked her, where is the starting point? And she replied, you and I are the starting point! This woman showed determination! She knew where to start. And today I make her words my own and I say to you: shall we begin? With you and me! Each one of you, in silence, ask yourself: if I must begin with myself, where exactly do I start? Each one of you, open your heart to feel where to start.”
“Do not let yourselves be robbed of hope! And not only that, but I say to us all: let us not rob others of hope, let us become bearers of hope!”(Pope Francis)

The WYDs has its origin in large meetings with the youth celebrated by Pope John Paul II in Rome. The international youth meeting came in 1984, through the occasion of the Holy Year of Redemption, and was held at the St. Peter's Square (Vatican). It was there that the Pope gave to WYD the Cross which became one of the main symbols of the event.
As a second step in the WYD history, 1985 was declared by the United Nations the first International Youth Year. The Vatican hold the second international meeting oriented to catholic young people. Was then announced the establishment of the World Youth Day.
The first WYD took place in Rome in 1986. Already in 1987 1 million young people got together in Buenos Aires, Argentina for its first international edition. Several meetings have been happening then all over the world every 2 or 3 years, mainly in Europe, Santiago de Compostela (Spain), Czestochowa (Poland), Paris (France), Rome (Italy), Cologne (Germany) and Madrid (Spain) but also in North America, Denver (USA) and Toronto (Canada) and in Oceania, Sydney (Australia) and Manila (Philippines) been this the WYD with attendance record, 4 million young people at the closing events.
With themes such as “I came that they might have life, and have it to the full” and “You are the salt of the earth ... you are the light of the world” the WYD always united youth not only for religious purposes but also with the desire of sharing experiences, exchanging cultures, meeting new friends and discussing subjects of common interest for the environment they live on.
