Investigations of lens opacity by 167 steelmakers exposed to infrared radiation showed that infrared radiation caused turbidity in the steelmaker’s lens. The detection rate of human (eye) was 37.1 (32.0)%, P <0.05 compared with that of control group (21.7%) (P <0.01). The 20-year-old steelmaking workers showed crystal opacity and no significant difference compared with the senior group. To exclude the influence of age, the turbidity after standardization was still significantly higher than that of the control group (P <0.01). With the increase of service life, the detection rate of lens opacity increased. In addition, the group of workers in the steelmaking group had opacity, arachnoid, radiate, flaky and stellate turbidities in addition to the dot-shaped and the line-shaped common to the control group.
