闻名遐迩的中华商业第一街——上海南京路,建国前就有近百年的发展史;在欢庆建国50周年时,她将以充满生命活力的崭新姿态迈进新的历程。建国前历尽沧桑南京路商业街是清道光23年(1843年)上海开埠后由英租界扩张而逐渐形成的。这之后的将近一个半世纪中,南京路的每一巨大变化无不刻着时代变迁的痕迹。初期,当时还称花园弄的南京路一带以流动商贩为主,活动多集中在界街以东。后来,花园弄“抛球场”两侧商店纷立,最早开设的有恒昌京货店、增泰洋布店、老德记药店、五芳斋:南市一些名店也纷纷迁来,或到这里开分店,如吴良材眼镜店;苏、杭等地商贾也来设店,还有一些洋行开设门市部,店市不断向西延伸,1862年时,已有14家洋行、1家西药店、9家洋布店和1家三阳南货店。1865年,花园弄改名为南京路。 19世纪70年代,西方近代工业消费品大量涌进上海,洋杂货店增多,出现了亨达利钟表行(法商)和一批银楼。1875年南京路上中、外商号已有40多
