South Africa: The government’s strict restrictions on issuing forestry plantation permits have led to shortages of timber. Roy Southey, head of the South African Timber Company, said that due to the shortage of water resources, the South African government has begun restricting cultivation from 20 years ago. The government sought to find the best way to balance timber demand with water demand and other environmental considerations, resulting in a significant decline in South African afforestation. With South Africa’s economic growth, afforestation is seriously lagging behind. It is expected that in the next 20 years, nearly half of the demand for pine wood structural materials in South Africa will have to be resolved through imports. However, imports are not only affected by exchange rate fluctuations.
