经过两年多的磋商酝酿,鲁迅美院与俄罗斯列宾美院于1993年5月25日在圣·彼得堡列宾美院签订了友好合作协议。 1990年鲁迅美院派该院陈尊三教授赴苏列宁格勒列宾美院转达了鲁迅美院院长宋惠民给列宾美院院长叶列米耶夫的信件,表达了愿与列宾美院建立友好关系的意向并邀请叶列米耶夫院长访问鲁迅美院。1991年应鲁迅美院邀请,叶列米耶夫院长、魏特尔宫斯基教授访问了鲁迅美院并在鲁美签订了友好合作意向书。1992年应魏特尔宫斯基教授之邀陈尊三教授去列宾美院讲学并与该院商定鲁美代表团回访日期,终于1993年5月鲁美派出了以宋惠民院长为团长,许荣初、陈尊三教授为团员的代表团,访问了列宾美院。访问期间代表团受到俄方热情接待。五月中旬恰逢该院学期末各科成绩汇展,代表团参加了院长巡视活动,看到该院高水平的学生成绩和严格的教学
