INTRODUCTION Slightly metamorphic unbound rocks in the New Zealand earthquakes can also distinguish stable nascent mineral assemblages, of which water-bearing calcium-aluminosilicates are of major importance. This article discusses the symbiotic combinations using the concept of Eskola (1920) mineral phases. In some of the lightest sediments, nascent minerals are found only in cements and volcanic glasses. In other cases, the detritus also degenerates, which is entirely metamorphic, even though a clear sedimentary structure remains. The symbiotic combination we are discussing
